Angels signing Anthony Rendon to $245 million deal

The Los Angeles Angels may have missed out on Gerrit Cole, but they at least secured free agency’s next-biggest prize.

Superstar third baseman Anthony Rendon is in agreement with the Angels on a seven-year, $245 million contract, MLB Network reported Wednesday.

Rendon, Cole and Stephen Strasburg were the top free agents this offseason, and the three signed during this week’s MLB Winter Meetings in San Diego.

The Angels were in the hunt for Cole, who landed with the Yankees Tuesday night on a record-setting nine-year, $324 million deal, while Washington chose to spend big on Strasburg (also seven years, $245 million) rather than Rendon.

The 29-year-old played for the Nationals for all seven of his big-league seasons up to this point, serving a big role during Washington’s World Series championship.

The Angels desperately were looking to make a major splash so not to continue wasting the prime years of Mike Trout.
