Man left ‘disgusted’ after finding meat in his vegan Morrisons meal

A vegan man was left feeling ‘disgusted’ after finding meat in a vegan ready meal that he bought from Morrisons.

Lukas Young decided to purchase the supermarket chain’s rainbow vegetable stew with kale and rosti topping after enjoying it previously.

But he was left in shock after he went to eat it for a second time and discovered what appeared to be beef mince in the dish.

Writing in a vegan group on Facebook , he said: “I’d eaten it before and there was no soya ‘beef’ substitutes and fat dripped from it when I put it on to my plate.”

Alongside his post, Lukas shared a close-up picture of the meal which shows grainy fragments of mince.

The stunned customer immediately contacted the supermarket to complain but was told that the food would have to be tested to see if it had indeed been contaminated with meat.

Lukas had originally binned the meal, but retrieved it and arranged for it to be sampled.

He told Edinburgh Live : “I was shocked and disgusted when I realised that my meal contained what I assumed was beef.

“I had had the same exact meal before and it doesn’t contain any meat substitutes so I was pretty certain. I contacted the head of PR for Morrisons who arranged a courier to pick up the meal and send it for testing.

“He called me back over a week later and confirmed that the sample contained meat. I was partly surprised they told me the truth but also sickened by the results.

“If meat can end up in their ‘vegan’ meals then what other contaminations might there be in their other food?”

People were outraged online

The tests confirmed that beef was present in the meal, and Lukas was offered £200 of Morrisons gift vouchers as compensation.

But he said he no longer wants to shop in the store again after what had happened as he made him feel “so sick”.

Lukas also said he feels the incident would have been taken more seriously if the dish had been contaminated with nuts or another allergen instead of meat.

A spokesperson for Morrisons said: “We have apologised to Mr Young because his meal did include a small amount of meat. We’re very sorry he tasted the product before realising it contained meat.

“We believe this is an isolated case.”
